You think your Wifi Network is Secure? Think again, Russian security firm ElcomSoft has released software that leverages NVIDIA GPUs to speed up the brute-force cracking of WPA and WPA2 pre-shared WiFi keys.

Break WPA and WPA2 encryption in your neighboring Wifi network (Illegel! should not be done, You might get into trouble!!) or Recover lost password of your own network, which ever is your need. ElcomSoft Distributed Password Recovery tool + a SLI configured dual NVIDIA 9800 GTX GPU’s can break the encryption in under a hour.

Features and Benefits

NVIDIA GPU acceleration (patent pending) reduces password recovery time by a factor of 50

Linear scalability with no overhead allows using up to 10,000 workstations without performance drop-off

Allows up to 64 CPUs or CPU cores and up to 4 GPUs per processing node

Broad compatibility recovers document and system passwords to various file formats (click for the complete list of formats)

Distributed password recovery over LAN, Internet or both

Console management for flexible control from any networked PC

Plug-in architecture allows for additional file formats

Schedule support for flexible load balancing

Minimum bandwidth utilization saves network resources and ensures zero scalability overhead

All network communications between password recovery clients and the server are securely encrypted

Flexible queue control allows easy job management

Install and remove password recovery clients remotely

Launch agents and server as system services

Keep track of CPU time and resource utilization, password recovery jobs and user activities

Industry certified: Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, Intel Software Partner, NVIDIA Developer Support

ElcomSoft Co. Ltd. accelerates the recovery of WPA and WPA2 encryption used in the Wi-Fi protocol by employing the new-generation NVIDIA video cards. ElcomSoft patent-pending GPU acceleration technology implemented in Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery allows using laptop, desktop or server computers equipped with supported NVIDIA video cards to break Wi-Fi encryption up to 100 times faster than by using CPU only.

WPA Shared Key Hack

Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery supports both WPA and the newer WPA2 encryption used in the majority of Wi-Fi networks, allowing breaking Wi-Fi protection quickly and efficiently with most laptop and desktop computers. The support of NVIDIA graphic accelerators increases the recovery speed by an average of 10 to 15 times when Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery is used on a moderate laptop with NVIDIA GeForce 8800M or 9800M series GPU, or up to 100 times when running on a desktop with two or more NVIDIA GTX 280 boards installed. Governments, forensic and corporate users will benefit from vastly increased speed of breaking Wi-Fi protection provided by Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery.

Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery supports a variety of applications and file formats, allowing password recovery from Office documents, Adobe PDF files, PGP disks and archives, personal security certificates and exchange keys, MD5 hashes and Oracle passwords, Windows and UNIX login passwords.

Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Project 2007 (.DOCX, .XLSX, .PPTX, .MSPX) (password recovery – “open” password only) (GPU accelerated!)

Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint XP/2003 (.DOC, .XLS, .PPT) (password recovery – “open” password only)

Microsoft Word/Excel 97/2000 (.DOC, .XLS) (password recovery – “open” password only)

Microsoft Word/Excel 97/2000 (.DOC, .XLS) (guaranteed decryption)

Microsoft Money (password recovery)

Microsoft OneNote (password recovery)

OpenDocument (ODF): documents, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics/drawing, formulae (password recovery)

PGP: zip archives (.PGP), PGP disks with conventional encryption (.PGD), self-decrypting archives (.EXE), whole disk encryption, secret key rings (.SKR) (password/passphrase recovery)

Personal Information Exchange certificates – PKCS #12 (.PFX, .P12) (password recovery)

Adobe Acrobat PDF files (“user” and “owner” password recovery)

Adobe Acrobat PDF files with 40-bit encryption (guaranteed decryption)

Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista logon passwords (LM/NTLM) (password recovery) (GPU accelerated!)

Windows SYSKEY startup passwords (password recovery)

Windows DCC (Domain Cached Credentials) passwords (password recovery)

UNIX users’ passwords (password audit/recovery)

Intuit Quicken (.QDF) (password recovery)

Lotus Notes ID files (password recovery)

MD5 hashes (plaintext recovery) (GPU accelerated!)

Oracle users’ passwords (password audit/recovery)

WPA and WPA2 passwords (password recovery) (GPU accelerated!)

The power of Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery is down to its distributed nature.

Prices start at $499 for 20 clients, going up to $4,199 for 2,500+ clients.

Reality check time. Even a 100x speed increase isn’t all that remarkable. If you’re using sub 6 to 8 character passwords/passphrases, and you’re leaving them in place for months (or years) at a time then you need to be worried. If you’re using long pre-shared keys consisting of uppercase, lowercase, digits and common punctuation, you’re still very safe.

For example, a 15 character password made up of uppercase, lowercase, digits and common punctuation is highly resistant to a brute-force attack. Even at the rate of 100,000,000 password attempts a second, cracking that could take 3.5 x 1012 years.

Note: Compare this to a 5 character password consisting of uppercase, lowercase, digits and common punctuation. Even at the modest rate of 50,000 password attempts a second, this could be cracked in about 13 hours!

Whether your system is resistant to this kind of attack really depends on the quality of your passphrase.

Note: This Information is just for educational and informative purposes only. How the users use it depends upon them and fully holds them responsible for their actions. I will not take any responsibility on damages or any other form of loss incurred due to it.

The Anti-Virus software have evolved with every new Virus. Every year thousands of new virus family or strain of existing virus are discovered. Every pirated software and the infamous crack.exe patch will (99%) install at least a BO (Backdoor opener) on your machine which will help its creator to get access to your network or just to give away your network presence and do a DoS attack on your network just for fun!

Since online gamers are notorious for disabling firewalls and other protection to optimize performance, this could be a lifesaver for the family computer used for online gaming by members of your household.

Performance

In recent tests, BitDefender received their highest rating for having removed 98% of all viruses and spyware in their rigorous tests. In addition, BitDefender has received the highest ratings for effectiveness by Virus Bulletin (VB100%) and AV Comparatives.org, and was certified by ICSA, Checkvir.com and West Coast Labs for its ability to detect viruses and virus replication while minimizing false positives (detecting viruses that are not there). One of the key features BitDefender has developed is a virtual machine that runs invisibly in the background on your computer where it tests suspicious code, which is code that looks like a virus but doesn’t currently match any of the known virus signatures. In this way, BitDefender can protect your computer from viruses no one has reported yet. In the same tests by AV-Test.org, BitDefender scored higher than Kaspersky, Norton, Computer Associates (CA) and McAfee on its proactive detection of viruses and other malware with this heuristic approach. BitDefender scans somewhat slower than some of its competitors, due (we believe) to this virtual machine running. Naturally, there’s going to be a price for this type of protection, but other products like ESET’s NOD32 have done a better job at minimizing it.

Although BitDefender is great at removing viruses and spyware, it excels at protecting your system from incoming viruses. The new BitDefender can actually strip viruses from your incoming HTML stream before the virus makes it to your browser. We think every new computer should be outfitted with this kind of protection.

Cost: 1-3 user licenses for one year at $24.95 (Rs. 1250). The lowest you can pay for a worthy Anti Virus Suite

The workstation is a x64 machine with hardware virtualization capabilities. This means I can run Hyper-V on my machine. Even if your machine’s hardware supports virtualization it is most likely not going to be enabled by default. You have to enable it via your BIOS setup.

2. Install the latest Graphics and Audio drivers

Being a server OS Windows 2008 carries with it basic graphics and audio drivers. To utilize the full strength of your hardware ensure you install the latest drivers for both graphics and audio hardware. Only with the proper graphics drivers will you be able to enable the “Aero” experience on Windows 2008.

3. Desktop Experience Feature

The Desktop Experience Feature enables a bunch of stuff that is by default present on a desktop OS. Most importantly it includes Themes, Windows Media player and the Aero related features. You will have to enable it form the Server Manager. The “Turn Windows features on or off” / “Add remove windows components” has all been rolled into the Server Manager now.

Server Manager > Features > Desktop Experience

Installing the Desktop Experience feature does not enable them. You have to manually set them up.

4. Themes

To enable Themes you will basically have to enable the Themes Service. Again being a server OS it is not enabled by default.

Services.MSC > Themes

Set the start up type to Automatic

Enabling the Aero Theme.

For this go to Control Panel > Personalization >Theme and select Windows Aero

5. Search

Search is also disabled by default on Windows 2008. Searching is important for me as I use it a lot to find my emails. To enable search you will have to add the File Services Role via Server Manager.

Server Manager > Roles > File Services > Windows Search

Outlook relies on this search service.

6. Disable Shutdown Event Tracker

Since I am using it as a workstation I do not want to keep a track of all the Shutdowns. The Shutdown Event Tracker is the pop up that you get asking you for a shutdown reason. To disable it

Open mmc.msc

Add the Group Policy snap-in

Under Administrative Templates expand System

Set Display Shutdown Event Tracer to Disabled

7. Audio

For audio you need to enable the Windows Audio service. You do this by setting the startup type to Automatic.

Services.msc > Windows Audio

Ensure you have proper drivers for your audio hardware… for me the default driver was not enabling the headphones … it started working fine after I got the proper driver.

8. SuperFetch

As a workstation, enabling SupertFetch will give you that additional bit of responsiveness. The SuperFetch services is disabled by default and when you try to enable it you will most likely get an error message “The operating system is not presently configured to run this application“

You will have to make two registry changes to enable this service. I basically copied them over from my Vista machine.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

EnablePrefetcher DWORD 3

EnableSuperfetch DWORD 3

9. Get a codec pack.

For media hungry buffs download a codec pack. This will ensure you can play all media files.

10. Enable Hyper-V

With Hyper-V you can run virtual machines on your workstation. This is useful if you want to run your tests on older OS versions. Enabling Hyper-V is easy

Server Manager > Roles > Hyper-V

Remember you need a Hyper-V enabled Windows 2008 license and also your hardware has to support virtualization.

Also If you are using an existing VHD it may ask you to re-Activate Windows as it detected hardware changes.

One good thing about Windows Server 2008 is that it no longer asks for the i386 folder like Windows 2003 while you enable features.

Aero and SideBar enabled with NOD32 v3 AntiVirus installed.

WindowsKey + Tab to switch between windows.

It just works great!

Good Luck!

THIS IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE ONLY. PLEASE PURCHASE ORIGINAL OS FROM APPLE OR ITS REGISTERED RESELLERS

Description:

Pre prepared Leopard virtual machine for VMware Workstation 6, VMware Fusion, VMware Server (requires a tweak to work) and VMware Player. No configuration necessary, working out of the boxl. Please buy a Leopard license before using this. This is strictly for educational purposes to show that it can be done on a virtual machine.

***********

SUPPORT APPLE: Buy a license for Leopard if you are going to use this!

EDUCATIONAL ONLY: This is for educational purposes ONLY. Not to be used in a productive or commercial environment.

NOTE: When this virtual machine is booting, if there is like a no smoking sign sort of thing (cross) over the Apple logo when booting, don’t worry about it, its normal

VMware Server Note: To use this with VMware Server you need to do a minor tweak to the config file. Otherwise it gives you an error that it was created on a version of VMware with more features. Instructions for the tweak are at the bottom.

Intel or AMD processor that supports SSE3 (Intel SSE3 works out of the box, but AMD SSE3 needs patching before it will work. Read at the bottom for patching instructions for AMD)

This has now been confirmed working on VMware Fusion as well!

It is possible to get this to work with SSE2 but you have to do that yourself

This release is Leopard Flat Image + 10.5.2 Update + netkas 9.2.0 SpeedStep kernel + mac.nub SMBIOS with the necessary VMware tweaks

It comes in a ready to go directory that contains everything you need to boot and use it in VMware, just navigate to the config file and open it as a vitual machine in VMware

By default RAM is set to 1GB, adjust this if necessary

Ethernet does work with a little bit of simple configuration. It wasn’t autoconfigured in this release so use the easy instructions at the bottom to get Ethernet working

USB does not work, which is not a surprise seeing as it didn’t work in Tiger on VMware either

Sound works partially, but its laggy and not practical at all

The default username is pcwiz and the admin password is pcwiz

Time Machine fix is not applied and Time Machine is not configured. I didn’t think Time Machine is practical considering you can make VM snapshots in VMware, but if you want to use it apply the Time Machine fix from here (download it, put it into an ISO and mount) and configure another virtual hard drive and format it with Disk Utility and configure Time Machine to use the new disk

There is 8.3 of free space left on the disk for your use (add another virtual disk if you need more space)

The virtual CD-ROM is not configured to Connect at Power On because it slows boot. Once you are booted into Leopard, connect the virtual CD-ROM by right clicking the CD icon on the bottom right of the VMware window and clicking Connect. Use the Edit option in that same menu to configure drive and ISO settings

No QE/CI at the moment

Where to get it?

This is basically a preprepped virtual machine that can boot right out of the box, Leopard with no configuration or installation. Use Google keywords “site:mediafire.com ?szghzuwiyix leo4vmware” to locate a ZIP which contains a text file with links to download all RAR files. If you want to download all the same parts at the same time, use Google keyword “~pcwiz’s VMware Leopard Image“.

How to use it?

This is not just a VMware disk image, it contains the configuration files and everything you need to boot it right out of the box. Once you have unzipped the final product, it is a folder called Mac OS X Leopard. Go into VMware and open an existing virtual machine and go into the unzipped Mac OS X Leopard folder and select the FreeBSD 64 bit config file.

PLEASE DO NOT SHARE OR POST THESE LINKS IN PUBLIC!

VMware Server Tweak

You must do this to make it work with VMware Server (tested with 1.0.5)

Open the Mac OS X Leopard folder and find the FreeBSD-64bit.vmx file

Open the file with Notepad or another basic text editor

Find the line where it says virtualHW.version = “6″

Change the “6″ to “3″ so it reads virtualHW.version = “3″

Save the file and open the virtual machine!

If it still gives you the error that it was created on a version of VMware with more features then do this

Open the config file again and change the virtualHW.version line to 4 so that it reads virtualHW.version = “4

Save it and try again.”

Patching for AMD SSE3

You only need to do this if you have an AMD SSE3 processor (Intel works out of the box)

Firstly, you need to have a working Tiger VM

Mount the leopard.vmdk file from this package as a virtual disk in the Tiger VM

Boot the Tiger VM and you should have access to the Leopard drive

Download Marvin’s AMD Utility here

Run it from the Tiger VM, for the “Volume/Directory to patch” choose your Leopard volume

Choose the “Patch all binaries” radio button and Patch

It will take a long time, but eventually it will be done

You should now be able to boot the Leopard VM properly

If it doesn’t work, tap F8 while the Leopard VM is booting to get to the boot: prompt and type in -v and hit Enter.

Ethernet How-To

To get Ethernet working in Leopard on VMWare follow these instructions (its easy)

Back at the VM home screen, go to VM menu >> Settings

Click Add and from the dialog that comes up, choose Ethernet Adapter and click Next

Make sure Bridged is chosen and the Connect at power on box is checked and click Finish

Boot into your Leopard VM and go to System Preferences (in the Dock)

Click on the Network preference pane

It will say that a new interface (en0) has been detected, choose the Ethernet Adapter from the left pane

Assuming that your internet is auto configuring DHCP, just click the Apply button.

Even if it says Cable disconnected or not connected, ignore it, Ethernet will still work

It will pull up all your DNS info and everything automatically, close System Preferences

You should be able to use Apple Software Update and go on the net fine!

Ethernet Method 2

If it still doesn’t work, here’s another method to do it (make sure that you have an Ethernet adapter configured as Bridged and that you have rebooted the virtual machine after adding the adapter)

Go back to System Preferences and open the Network preferences again

Click on Ethernet from the left pane and at the bottom click the Assist Me button

In the resulting dialog box click the Assistant button

The Network Setup Assistant will start up, give the Location a name and click Continue

Choose the “I use a cable modem to connect to the Internet” option

Click Continue again, and then it will take a moment and tell you that you can’t connect automatically and to enter some details

Without entering any details click Continue and click OK at the dialog box (this sort of “activates” the Ethernet)

Now click the Go Back button twice to get to the screen to choose a connection option

This time choose “I connect to my local area network (LAN)”

At the Ready to Connect screen click Continue and now it will give you a confirmation that you are connected

Click Done or whatever button and close System Preferences, Internet should be working

How to increase screen resolution

Because there are no video drivers for it, you can’t just configure screen resolution from System Preferences but there is a manual way

Using Apple Software Update

You can use Apple Software Update to update Mac OS X (if you have a working Ethernet connection)

Before updating anything, take a snapshot of the virtual machine just in case something goes wrong

To do this, while your virtual machine is running, go to the VM menu >> Snapshot >> Take Snapshot

To open Software Update, go to the Apple menu and click Software update, it will scan for updates and it will list them

As of now, pretty much any update is OK, except the Time Machine update. DO NOT apply the Time Machine update (it installs a new kernel that will possibly mess up your install)

If anything goes wrong after an update, just restore your Snapshot (VM menu >> Snapshot >> Revert to snapshot)

Troubleshooting

If this VM doesn’t boot properly or if it hangs at the Apple logo, the first step in troubleshooting is to find your errors. Right at the vmware splash screen, click inside the window and tap F8 as fast as you can. You eventually get to a boot: prompt. At the prompt enter -v and hit Enter, watch the messages and post up your errors or where it halts!

The next thing to do is to try an older kernel. Tap F8 to get to the boot: prompt again and type in mach_kernel.toh and hit Enter. See if this kernel boots the system properly.

The announcement of the Dell Adamo luxury thin-and-light laptop (above) reminded consumers that yes, there exists a market in between the white-hot Netbook segment and the ever-larger desktop replacement segment. Indeed, fully-featured thin-and-light laptops are still here for those of us who need portability and horsepower under the hood (and hey, a little style, too).

But where’s the value proposition? Just how much Adamo can you get versus Air, or Envy, or Vaio Z?

Here’s a statistical head-to-head comparison to figure that out. I took similar configurations — within 15000 Rs of each other, from 86K to 100K — of the Dell Adamo, Voodoo Envy 133, Apple Macbook Air and Sony Vaio Z, with Apple’s standard Macbook, Dell’s Studio XPS, HP’s Pavilion dv3z and Lenovo’s X301 thrown in for comparison.

Here’s a look at just how much laptop these machines offer for the price, from dimensions to components to looks.

Price

Here are the suspects. For the purpose of this comparison, I tried to choose configurations as close as possible to each other. Here are the price tags on each, with additional information on the range in parentheses.

Dell Adamo: Rs 1,00,000 (Rs 1,35,000 also available)

The Adamo is Dell’s new premium thin-and-light laptop.

Voodoo Envy 133: Rs 90,000 (to Rs 1,50,000)

The Envy is a premium laptop by VoodooPC, a “craft” division of HP.

Apple Macbook Air: Rs 89,000 (or Rs 1,25,000)

The Air is Apple’s thinnest, lightest laptop.

Sony Vaio Z: Rs 80,000 (or Rs 90,000)

The Z is Sony’s thin-and-light offering for executives.

Apple Macbook: Rs 85,000 (or Rs 1,50,000)

The Macbook is Apple’s entry-level laptop.

Dell Studio XPS: Rs 90,000 (from 73,000)

The XPS Studio is Dell’s sexiest 16-inch laptop.

HP Pavilion dv3z: Rs 1,00,000 (from 75,000)

The Pavilion dv3z is HP’s thinnest and lightest full-featured notebook with an integrated optical drive.

Lenovo X301: Rs 1,00,000

The X301 is Lenovo’s premier ultraportable laptop.

When it comes to flexibility, the non-luxury laptops rule. Most of the laptops positioned as “premium” products drastically limit your pricing options — the Adamo, Macbook Air and Sony Vaio Z come in only two configurations, the Envy 133 comes in four (including the most expensive unit of the bunch), and the X301 comes in three if you include its cousins, which carry different model numbers. On the other hand, the XPS Studio 16 and Pavilion dv3z offer myriad configurations, giving you more freedom to pinch pennies on certain parts (such as RAM) and spend on others (such as CPU). But they don’t look as sleek and are a bit chunkier (more on that next).

The Bottom Line

So which thin-and-light premium laptop should you get? Clearly in this segment it’s all about trade-off: whether you value design, or CPU power, or storage, or weight, or dimensions, or ports, more.

When it comes to thinness and components, the Macbook Air still wins overall. It’s simply the most thin for the money if you care about looks. (If you don’t, and weight is paramount, the X301 continues to rule this roost.)

If you can’t stand Mac OS X and need the lithe profile, Adamo beats the more innovative Envy 133 with better, more up-to-date components and better battery life.

If you’re a power user looking for a premium laptop that has flexibility, go with the Sony Vaio Z. It beats out Adamo, Air and Envy on most fronts and has serious muscle for only a little bit more thickness (but less depth). It’s also got a chiclet keyboard — for that premium look — and the wide, high-res screen is great for in-flight video.

Just days ahead of an April 1st activation date for the Conficker worm squirming through the Windows operating system, security researchers at the Honeynet Project have scored a major breakthrough, finding a way to fingerprint the malware on infected networks.

Now, with the help of Dan Kaminsky and Rich Mogull, off-the-shelf network scanning vendors have the ability remotely (and anonymously) detect Conficker infections.

“You can literally ask a server if it’s infected with Conficker, and it will tell you,” Kaminsky explained. “Usually, we get to scan for a vulnerability but, because Conficker actually changes the way that Windows looks on a network, we now get to scan and get a “this box is infected” message which is pretty rare.”

All the credit for the breakthrough goes to the Honeynet Project’s Tillmann Werner and Felix Leder, two German researchers who figured out that malware tries to patch the same security flaw (MS08-067) that it exploited during the initial infection. Conficker uses a binary patch — NetpwPathCanonicalize() works quite a bit differently — which means that network scanners can pinpoint the existence of the malware.

The Honeynet Project has released proof of concept scanner and, later today (March 30th), enterprise-class scanners are expected to follow suit. They will include Tenable (Nessus), McAfee/Foundstone, nmap, ncircle, and Qualys, Kaminsky said.

Microsoft’s description of Conficker Worm – Click Here

The nmap scanner is freely available.

The Conficker malware is programmed to generate thousands of domain names a day and, on April 1st, infected machines will start calling home to the authors for further instructions. However, as Joe Stewart explains, this does not mean there will be a computer meltdown on April 1.

Here’s why you shouldn’t fear the worm’s activation date:

Conficker.C is already able to receive updates via its P2P protocol today, so focusing on the April 1st date is misguided.

Don’t underestimate the reach of the Conficker Working Group. These are the security industry’s heavy-hitters, and you can be sure they are working diligently to mitigate the domain issue.

Even though there are 50,000 domains to look at, they are being closely monitored, and if any malicious servers do appear, they will likely be taken down or null-routed very quickly.

If the author(s) of Conficker planned some massive update of malicious code, they certainly wouldn’t do it on the one day everyone is watching for it.
